231. Cruiserweight Championship: Rey Mysterio vs. Matt Hardy (w/ Shannon Moore)

WrestleMania XIX
March 30, 2003
Safeco Field
Seattle, WA

This match kicks off WrestleMania perhaps faster than any other opener. Matt charges Rey only to be backdropped out of the ring. Rey then corkscrews through the air over the top on to Hardy and Shannon Moore.

Matt is forced to wrestle a power style because of the size difference. Matt hits Rey with the twist of fate but can only get two, to his disbelief. A nice spot follows where Matt attempts a razor’s edge off the top, but Rey turns it in to a hurricanrana. He covers, but Moore puts Hardy’s foot on the rope.

Rey hits a 619 but Hardy ducks the west coast pop. Rey leaps up for a victory roll, but Matt counters and hooks his arm on the rope. He gets the three count and escapes with his title.

The match is quite short, but is the type of match you want for an opener. Unfortunately, Rey Mysterio has had much better matches to open pay-per-views for WCW for the Cruiserweight Title. The match had potential but lives up to almost none of it.
