March 23, 1997
It’s the WrestleMania debut of The Rock, still as Rocky Maivia, defending his Intercontinental Title. It is also the singles debut at WrestleMania of Rikishi as The Sultan. Honky Tonk Man has also joined commentary because he is apparently searching for the next great IC Champ. Who could have imagined we’d have two future Hall of Famers in this one.
The match is nothing too special, which was the WWE at large in 1997. Maivia’s gimmick was essentially being an underdog and overcoming the odds. That’s essentially what we see here, with The Sultan dominating a majority of the match, save for a couple of athletic exhibitions by Rocky. After some more offense by The Sultan, Maivia scores with a school boy for the win and retains his belt.
The major spot comes after the match when The Sultan, with the help of the Sheik and the Iranian flag beat down Rocky, prompting his father Rocky Johnson to come make the save and eventually running off the heels and standing tall.
