262. Big John Studd (w/ Bobby Heenan) vs. Andre The Giant

March 31, 1985
Madison Square Garden
New York City, NY

The $15,000 Slam Match. The conceit of the contest is that Andre must bodyslam Studd to win the 15k, and if he cannot, he must retire. The money is contained in a WWF branded duffle bag full of wadded up bills.

This is certainly the most physically able Andre we ever see at a WrestleMania. It’s a plodding, physical match. Studd fails at his attempt at a slam. An incredibly long bearhug follows.

I found myself wondering how exactly Studd even wins? Does he have to slam Andre? Pin him? I’m not certain. They spend much of the match in the ropes or in rest holds. A series of kicks leads to the bodyslam for Andre’s win.

Andre starts throwing out the crumpled bills until Heenan takes the money and runs. It’s nice to see Andre looking happier and in better shape than his WrestleMania appearances that came after, but the in ring action is simply uninteresting.
